When does sinusitis need surgery?
When symptoms persist beyond twelve weeks despite adequate medical treatment, or where there are polyps or structural obstruction. Most acute sinusitis needs no surgery at all.
Should tonsils be removed for recurrent infection?
Surgery is considered when infections are frequent enough to disrupt school or work despite treatment, or where enlarged tonsils obstruct breathing during sleep.
How long should hoarseness last before I worry?
More than three weeks warrants examination of the vocal cords, particularly in smokers.
Is a neck lump serious?
Many are benign, but a painless lump in an adult that persists for more than a few weeks should be assessed rather than watched.
Can hearing loss be treated surgically?
Some types, yes — for example tympanoplasty for a perforated eardrum or surgery for middle ear disease. Assessment starts with an audiogram.
